RUGBY SKILLS: HOW TO POSITION YOURSELF IN A SCRUM

When you're starting out in the game scrummaging can be difficult to get right. Here's our advice on how to get your positioning right at the scrum. 

A scrum is a method of restarting play that occurs regularly in rugby matches and involves eight players on each side. Getting into the right position for a scrum is not always easy. Watch our video on how to position yourself in a scrum and to do so safely and effectively.

Nino Maso, who plays in the second or back row for Marcq en Baroeul in French rugby's fourth tier, gives us his advice on getting your posture and positioning right when scrummaging. 

 

1. POSTURE

Scrummaging safely while using all your strength hinges on getting your back in the right position. Get it right and you can avoid injury and push effectively. You also need to place your legs correctly and focus your eyes properly. 

“There are four key factors when it comes to getting your body position right in the scrum. First of all, your back needs to be correctly positioned. Your knees need to be at right-angles to obtain maximum power and you need to bind tightly with your team-mates. Finally, you should fix your gaze on a point in the distance .

 

2. POSITIONING

Now that you know how to get your posture right in the scrum, the next step involves getting into the right position with your team-mates. Each of the eight forwards adopts a specific position in the scrum. 

“The hooker puts their weight on their stronger leg. The loosehead and tighthead props then bind on to the hooker. Their pelvises should all be at the same level. The two second rowers then bind together, get on their knees and then hook their arms between the legs of the props. The second rowers should place their shoulders just beneath the buttocks of the prop and the hooker. When they push in the scrum, the second rowers push in the same way as the front row, with their legs flexed at 90 degrees. As for the three players in the back row, they also get on their knees first, and place their shoulder on the buttocks of the second rowers in front of them.”
